The Sheldons of Beoley
The Bigland Sheldon Pedigree is a large handwritten document (3 feet by 20 feet) completed 200 years ago by Ralph Bigland of the College of Arms. It is held at the Warwick County Record Office and this is a complete transcription of its contents.
There will be some errors and in some places the names are difficult to read, however it is 99% accurate (a bold claim from a genealogical transcriber).
In the book about the Sheldons by E.A.B. Barnard he notes (page 104) "Mrs Warriner of Weston Park possesses a very full Sheldon pedigree made by Ralph Bigland in 1808." Presumably she gifted it to the Warwick County library where it is stored under the reference HR/91.
Heading in top left hand corner, underneath the Sheldon coat of arms, as follows:
“To the memory of Ralph Sheldon of Beoley in the county of Worcester Esq a great benefactor to this office -
Who died at his manor house at Weston in the parish of Long Compton in the county of Warwick on Midsummer day 1684 aged 61 years wanting 6 weeks, the day afterwards his heart and bowels were buried in Long Compton chancel in a vault by those of his father, mother, grandfather, and on the 10th July following his body in a vault by his ancestors under our Lady’s chapel joining on the north-side to St Leonards church of Beoley. He married Henrietta Maria daughter of Thomas Savage Viscount of Rock Savage by Elizabeth his wife daughter of Thomas Lord Darcey of Chich in Essex, Viscount Colchester and Earl Rivers but by her had no issue.
The above inscription and armorial ensigns are on a tablet placed in the library in the College of Arms by the late Ralph Bigland Esq Somerset Herald afterwards Garter principal King of Arms”
Notes at bottom as follows:
“ I do hereby certify the above pedigree to be compiled from the Records of the College of Arms London, abstracts from wills, extracts from Parish Registers, monumental Inscriptions and other authorities examined this eighth day of July 1808 by me, signed Ralph Bigland, Norroy King of Arms”
