Family Groups

This section will break down the various family groups that we have discovered. Family groups will primarily be organized by DNA match. Those that have not yet tested, and cannot connect a paper trail to one of the larger family groups, will be given their own section for further research. In addition to these we will have a section for those families that carry the name of Sheldon but had an NPE (non-paternal event) since the establishment of the surname. Only those that are confirmed NPE's either by confirmed documentation or DNA will be included. The family of author Sydney Sheldon, who legally took the surname as a pen name, will be included in this last section - as an example.

Group A

Group A has been identified by y-chromosome DNA testing and broken into the following groups:

  1. A1: The Sheldon's of Bakewell, Derby, England
  2. A2: Descendants of Godfrey Sheldon of Maine
  3. A3: Descendants of John Sheldon of Providence, Rhode Island
  4. A4: Descendants of Richard Sheldon of New Jersey
  5. A5: The Sheldon's of Durham, England

Group B

Group B has been identified by y-chromosome DNA testing and broken into the following groups:

  1. B1: Descendants of Isaac Sheldon of Massachusetts
  2. B2: Descendants of John Sheldon of the Narragansett County (aka John 13 or the South Kingston line)

Group C

Group C is made of Sheldon lines that have not yet been able to connect by paper trail to a Group A or Group B family and have not yet had DNA testing done.

  1. C1: The Sheldon's of Birmingham, England including the Beoley line
  2. C2: The Sheldon's of Wiltshire

Group D

Group D is made of families that carry the name of Sheldon due to a confirmed NPE (non-paternal event), such as adoption.
